The original point was not about entertainment value; it was about physical value.
I perfectly understand entertainment value (but it is truly, obscenely overpriced these days: is any sportsman worth millions per year? is a ticket worth hundreds or thousands of dollars?).
Again, what physical values do you derive from the NFL (or in my case the NBA)? None.
So, all this entertainment, all this time killing has value only as we can afford to live vicariously.
These activities can produce great wealth, interest, controversy, pathos and drama but they produce little or, in my opinion, nothing of necessary value.
(And, yet, I enjoy many of them, including Facebook.)
Religion, the military and politics also produce little or nothing and often destroy life though they control and manipulate unbelievable resources and wealth.
In its most elemental form value is that which sustains life.
And that's all I have to say about that.

They compare themselves to the Arab Spring uprisings and/or the Civil Rights movement, but people in those movements have a clear goal and their protests are directed toward achieving that goal. Oh, and as an addendum to this wager: You also can't engage in silly semantic battles or petty attacks on their use of non-standard words (eg, commonsense v. common sense), but instead have to make an honest attempt to understand what your opponent is saying. And if they tell you that they weren't trying to say what you think they were trying to say and that you were misunderstanding them, you have to allow them to do so; rather than insist that ONE WORD can be used to hang someone, no matter how much they insist that it wasn't significant or didn't represent what they were saying.

Oh, and here's a good idea: Test my theory. Denounce your behavior and admit that your smears against liberals weren't fair, and that the actions of some liberals don't necessarily reflect any of the others. And admit that it wasn't right to smear the motives of ANY liberals, including the kooks; and show that you can disagree with someone without making it a personal attack against them. And you can acknowledge that, while many people on the left wage personal battles against conservatives they disagree with, that this behavior isn't acceptable from anyone and that you will no longer engage in it.

And then do it. Go two weeks without smearing your opponents in any way. Explain why they're wrong, without making it personal against them, or questioning their motives, or hurling insults about them being depraved socialists...even against the ones who really ARE depraved socialists, unless that happens to be how they refer to themselves. Just tell us why their words or actions are wrong, but without making this about them personally.

What could it hurt? And if the personal attacks continue to rage after that, after you've made a public apology and changed your smearing ways; then you can proudly proclaim that it was a test at my behest, and that you weren't really apologizing at all. And I promise I will make my own admission of error, both at my blog and on the American Nihilist blog, and tell everyone that it really was a test and that they all failed miserably.

Seriously, give it a go. Test my theory. See if the attacks continue even after you admit guilt and stop smearing. But the thing is, I don't think you can do it. Yeah, you could apologize, and you might even play nice for a bit, but I don't think you can write an argument without smearing your opponents, because that's all you've got. To you, it's not enough to say why you think a 30% tax rate is wrong, unless you can talk about it being a secret plot to hurt America.

But hey, you can prove me wrong that way, too. And if you pull this off and go the two weeks without personal attacks, I promise I will publicly state that I was wrong about that and that Donald Douglas was a better man than I gave him credit for. Anyway, as for my response: Yes, I completely and totally think it's wrong for people to be fired for things they do unrelated to their jobs; and that includes things they've written and said. And yeah, that even extends to you and your hate speech.

So what? Are you expecting me to denounce what they did? Should I start a list denouncing EVERYONE who does things I disagree with? Because if I did, it'd be a long fucking list, because there's a lot of things that people do that I disagree with. So...why are you asking me about this? Pretend you actually believe in free speech. Then pretend that there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, no matter how hard one is being criticized. Then read William Jacobson, who did not endorse me here:

Donald, do you ever watch 30 Rock? There was an episode where Tina Fey's character dreads going back to her high school reunion because everyone hated her in high school and was mean to her. But it eventually turns out that the reason they hated her was because she was so rude to them all the time and was so wrapped into her own little world that she wasn't aware of how vicious her insults were and how that was the reason people didn't like her. She wasn't being bullied. She was the bully, and didn't realize it.

That's you. You're the poor little victim who imagines that the world is out to get you because everyone's so mean to you; completely unaware of what a total dick you are to the rest of us. So that even when we try to be nice to you, you lash out and insult us repeatedly until we give up and stop being polite.

Meanwhile, I'm NOT an attack blogger. In fact, a review of my recent output shows that I'm more likely to be arguing against people on my own side than yours, and remain respectful of my opponents; even when I strongly disagree with them. Because that's how it's done. This isn't personal; it's politics. You need to learn the difference.

So you can keep calling me a coward, a liar, a morally bankrupt nihilist, a slimy polecat, or whatever other insult you can dream up; and it doesn't score you any points whatsoever and it certainly doesn't hurt my feelings. But what it DOES do is demonstrate why anyone would want to hate you. Because you're so full of hate yourself.
